How to Write the Projects Section

For anyone with limited work history, the projects section is the most important part of the resume — it is the only place you can demonstrate ability directly rather than by assertion. For experienced candidates it is optional and should earn its space.
The structure of an entry
Each project should carry five things:
- Name, and your role if it was a team project.
- A date range, so the reader knows whether it is current.
- The technologies or methods used — this is keyword-dense and worth listing explicitly.
- A link, if one exists. This is the single most valuable element.
- Two or three bullets: what it does, a decision you made, and an outcome.
Outcomes for projects with no users
Not every project has an audience. Substitute technical or scope outcomes: the size of the dataset, the performance you achieved, the constraint you worked under, the thing that made it hard.
"Built an offline-first scheduling tool with conflict resolution, running entirely client-side with no backend cost" has no user count and still communicates real capability.
What to leave out
- Tutorial follow-alongs where you typed what the video typed.
- Unfinished projects, unless the incomplete part is genuinely ambitious and you say so.
- Projects everyone in your cohort built identically.
- Anything you cannot explain a design decision about in an interview.
Frequently asked questions
- How many projects should I list?
- Two or three, well described. A list of eight shallow entries is weaker than two substantial ones.
- Do group projects count?
- Yes, as long as you state your specific contribution. "Built the authentication and payment modules" is credible; implying you built all of it is not.
